“The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to accidental injuries or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts and becomes strong, charming, and less affected by old age.”
Charka Samhita. Vol. 1 v:88-89
Anointing the body with oil is possibly the oldest and most sacred ritual know to humankind, signalling honour, benediction, and affection.
In Ayurveda this process of anointing the body in oil is called Abhyanga, which literally translates to ‘glowing body’, and believe me the post abhyanga glow is real!
So what is it?
Abhyanga is a broad term that means any kind of Ayurvedic massage. Self abhyanga is done daily to soothe and support the nervous system, especially for people who have more Vata (air and ether) in their constitution. Benefits include:
Smoother more lustrous skin
Provides relief from stress, tension & low energy
Supports musculoskeletal & nervous system health
Tones the muscles & body’s tissues
Enhances circulation
Improves sleep patterns
Stimulates organ function
Ok, I’m curious – what should I expect?
Oil and lots of it!
Sneha is the Sanskrit word for both oil and love. There is an inherent connection between enveloping the body in oil and enveloping it in love. Both experiences give a deep feeling of stability, warmth, and comfort. Oil and love are sukshma (subtle) and both are able to penetrate the minute channels of the body, and go deep into the tissues (dhatus).
Warm herbal oils are the cornerstone of this massage. Abhyanga works on the nervous system soothing the body and calming the mind. Leaving you with a sense of deep nourishment and a feeling of being hugged from top to toe.
This massage starts seated, beginning with the head, before lying down. The massage progresses to the face and neck then the front body before turning and working on the back body, finishing at the feet. The oil is massaged in circles on the joints, chest, and abdomen, and in an long strokes the length of the arms and legs.
